Football and basketball maths
Same maths, sport skin. Switch between football (goals) and basketball (baskets), pick a skill, then chase your own best — not a sibling rivalry meltdown.

Why a theme helps
Some children switch off when practice sounds like a test. A goal tally or a basket count reframes the same facts. The questions match the classic game; only the colours and the cheer change.
Football: match-day drills
Think like a training session: warm-up on an easy table (2s or 10s), drill this week's school table for two short rounds, then one Mixed or MTC style “match” for the goal tally. House ideas: a five-round penalty shoot-out (only count rounds at 90%+ accuracy), or parent vs child with the adult starting five goals down.
Basketball: accuracy first
Coaches care about shooting percentage. So do we — watch the accuracy figure at the end. Free throws: Practice or 90 seconds on one table until answers are clean. Around the world: one round each of bonds, doubles, halves and squares. Three-pointers: square numbers for Year 5+.
Year-group quick guide
- Reception–Year 1: bonds to 10, small doubles.
- Year 2: 2, 5 and 10 tables.
- Year 3: 3, 4 and 8 (doubling links 2→4→8).
- Year 4: all tables to 12 × 12; Mixed + MTC style. Weight practice toward 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 (STA parent guidance).
Year groups follow the national curriculum in England.
When competition turns sour
Switch to Practice mode (no timer), hide league charts for a week, and praise accuracy. The Education Endowment Foundation's maths guidance notes that maths anxiety can overload working memory — a frozen child may blank on facts they know.
