Hit the Button for teachers

A free, no-login fluency game for Reception to Year 6 that works on whiteboards, Chromebooks and tablets. Use it as a starter, for interventions or as homework, and track progress with the end-of-round score and accuracy.

Ideas for the classroom

Whole-class starter (5 minutes)

Put a 60-second round on the board and let pupils take turns to tap, or have the class shout answers while one child plays. Change the table each day to match your fluency focus.

Daily fluency slot

Many schools run a short daily maths fluency session. One round each of bonds, doubles and a times table fits neatly into ten minutes.

Interventions

For a pupil who's stuck on one table, set the 90-second level on that table alone and record their score each session. Moving from 15 to 25 over a fortnight is a progress story the child can see.

Year 4 MTC preparation

Mixed tables at the 30-second setting is good practice for quick recall. Read our guide to the Multiplication Tables Check for how the real check works.

What the MTC guidance says that's useful in class

Keep timed practice low-stakes

The EEF's KS2 and KS3 guidance supports building quick recall of number facts. It also flags maths anxiety: it can overload working memory and shows up even in KS1, through freezing, fidgeting or avoiding maths. In practice, that means letting anxious pupils use the 90-second setting, not displaying class rankings, and comparing each child only with their own last score. Scores here never leave the device, so there's no leaderboard to worry about.

If your school runs Mastering Number

The NCETM's Mastering Number programme uses a short daily fluency session in Reception to Year 2, built on number sense and the rekenrek. This game doesn't replace that. It works best afterwards, as a quick way for children to retrieve the facts they've just reasoned about.

Frequently asked questions

Do pupils need accounts?

No. There are no logins and we do not collect pupil data. Best scores stay in the browser on that device.

Will it work on Chromebooks, iPads and whiteboards?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser. Buttons are large enough for whiteboard taps and whole-class starters.

Is this the same as the official MTC practice?

No. Schools should use the STA "try it out" check for the real screen. Our MTC-style mode is general fluency practice with similar timing and weighting.

Are there adverts?

The site may show a small number of ads away from the game area to cover running costs. Child-directed / non-personalised treatment is described in the privacy policy.
